carolyn barta is the author. she is joining us from her home in texas. you knew ross perot as a journalist before many people met hi. can you tell us about his roots in texarkana and what shaped the man we knew of a national stage? >> perot was from texarkana. he had an average texas childhood. as a boy he broke horses and traded horses. he was an eagle scout. even in later tonight i think he kept all of the traits of the eagle scout. he would set of objectives and goals and try to pursue those goals. he was very much in the texas tradition of the day. as he grew and went to the naval academy and started his own businesses, he was representing the can-do spirit of texas. his vision was a big, the state was big, there were powerless opportunities. the sky was the limit. he really sort of played into what was the texas mythology with texas politicians who were larger than life, very successful businessman who made a fortune here. they were risk takers, they were not afraid to fail. that was the sort of spirit he had at that i think got him into this thing.

caller: this is carolyn. host: where are you calling from? caller: mississippi. host: what you think of the president's proposal for streamlining agencies into one group. caller: i do not completely agree with it. host: why not? caller: because they have different functions. i do not think that the government agencies are the problem. i think it is people trying to prejudice folks against government workers. i think the problem is the loopholes. we are not generating money. that is the problem. everybody is so weak minded and scared of their political position. let me tell you. it is the wealthy people who are killing us. even with church donations. we have people just doing double dipping. you have churches worth billions of dollars for paying no taxes. they would rather cut medicare and social security. host: in "the houston chronicle" this morning, they have this headline. during his announcement, the president also talked about helping business. it can be maddening but career coach carolyn levine advises to be proactive. don't be afraid to ask when you can expect to hear from them. who should you follow up with? if you're upfront about it, they may respect you more for that and you won't just be sitting by the phone. you will have a list of things to do. it's often a waiting game of at least a week or two, but levine says even the best companies have candidates that sometimes fall through the cracks. meaning it takes time. or they need to wait for a key d decisionmaker to come back with salary requirements or how long they can offer a contract and budgets have to be sorted out or they have to finish the roster of interviews. for instance, this is an obvious one, but send a thank you note in the first 24 hours. and, yes, in this day and age e-mail is fine. it doesn't have to be on painer. then you can wait five business days to follow up with the person who actually interviewed you, and just check in with them and say how is it going? i'm literally just checking in. suzanne? >> within 24 hours, huh? th

[applause] every veteran who needs a job should be able to get one. 2009 we pass legislation to begin phasing out state taxes on military retirement income. that law is a strong signal that we want military veterans to move to missouri, to work in missouri and make missouri their home. in 2010 we launched
